Is Technology Destroying the Family Unit?

Electronic gadgets from TV to mobile phones have become a daily tool for millions of people around the world. Technology has brought us tools that allow us to connect to the world at the touch of a button. He has made the world a smaller place to live. Time is no longer a constraint in communication. Technology has brought comfort in all aspects of life from banking, shopping, travel arrangements, online education and the list goes on. What is the impact of technology on family life?

The family relationship has been eroded to become a group of people living in the same house, sharing genealogies or living in an instant in their "in love" life. Many families live together but do not spend time together. They do not have meaningful talks. They can all be in the same room but someone on the cell phone and the other on the computer and the other watching TV. Technology is what makes our relationships become weak. We have developed a global, connected and cooperative society that is isolated and disconnected from reality.

"Americans spend 60 hours a month online, and if you put these hours in a row, you'll be browsing the Web for a whole month." Nielsen and Pew Research Center. These are statistics only on the web. An average US home has at least 5 different communication tools ranging from TV, Xbox, mobile phones, laptops and iPods. The world is technologically obsessed. This leaves us with little time or no time to meaningful talks with each other; a recipe for expatriate relations. Has eroded sympathy and antisocial behavior - individualism, has slowly crept in and now a huge monster in our midst. What can society do? How can families avoid decadence in the basic things that bring them together?

In any family unit, communication is a key element of the family. A strong family will cause individuals belonging to that family to have additional energy to meet the challenges of life, and this will indeed create a strong and successful society. Technology exists to stay and will continue to evolve. So we must find ways and means to live with it.

Here are some suggestions on how to help catch the "Mania Gadget" and put this huge monster called "Individual" to escape.

Create a forum where all members of the family will have an open discussion about their opinion of various electronic devices within the home. Make it fun by collecting all the tools and placing them on a central table in front of you. Call the tools and manipulate them as if you were talking to someone.
Let everyone in the family talk about what they feel about the family relationship. Expressing feelings and discussing problems promotes peace and harmony.
Discuss what you all think is the side effects of family unit tools.
Collectively reach consensus on how much time you should spend together each day and what group activities will be done at that particular time.
Establish the rules and procedures for implementation on how to deal with the various instruments at the time agreed in (4) above. For example, all mobile phones must be turned off.
Together we will have better families and a better society.
